How it works

How to find TikTok hashtags in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Describe the video

What happens in it and who it's for. The more specific you are, the more specific the niche tags get.

  2. 2

    Pick a style

Casual, professional, playful, or minimal. Minimal gives you 3 to 5 tight tags; the others give you a fuller set.

  3. 3

    Copy a set

You get 3 sets: broad, niche, and a mix. Copy one into your caption, then swap in a tag from another set if it fits better.

How TikTok hashtags actually work

Hashtags on TikTok are less about being found by people scrolling a tag and more about telling the app what your video is, so it can find the right first viewers. That means the useful tags are the ones that describe the content, not the ones with the biggest numbers. This generator gives you 3 sets built on that idea.

How the generator works

Describe the video, pick a style, and the tool sends that to an AI model on Lemonpost's server. It comes back with 3 sets: broad tags that place the video in a category, niche tags that describe exactly what's in it, and a mixed set that combines both. Nothing you type is stored, there's no login, and each visitor gets a daily free limit that resets the next day. The tool can't see live view counts for a tag, so treat the sets as a starting point and check any tag you're unsure about in the TikTok search bar, where you'll see how many posts use it and whether they're recent. Casual and playful styles allow trend-style tags; professional and minimal stick to plain topic words.

Broad, niche, and why you want both

Broad tags like #cooking or #fitness have millions of posts. On their own, they tell TikTok almost nothing, because everything is in them. Niche tags like #garlicnoodles or #studentmeals are where the signal is: fewer videos, a clearer topic, and an audience that actually cares. A good caption mixes a couple of broad tags with 3 or 4 niche ones. Skip #fyp, #foryou, and #viral. They're the most used tags on the app and they don't describe anything, so they don't help TikTok match your video to viewers. The space you spend on them is better spent on a tag that says what the video is. A quick way to check a niche tag: search it in the app and look at the top videos. If they're about your topic and posted recently, the tag is alive. If the top results are months old or off-topic, pick another.

TikTok caption and hashtag limits

TikTok captions can be up to 4,000 characters at the time of writing, and hashtags count toward that. TikTok doesn't publish a separate hashtag count limit, but only the first couple of lines show before the More button, so a long block of tags pushes your actual caption out of view. In practice 3 to 6 tags is plenty. Hashtags can't contain spaces or punctuation, and a tag with several words is easier to read in camel case (#StudentMeals). Tags belong in the caption: there's no sign that hashtags in comments do anything on TikTok. You can edit the caption after posting, but the first hours of a video matter most, so get the tags right before you hit post. Keep tags in lowercase or camel case, and never put a space after the # or the tag breaks.

Keep a tag set per content type

If you post the same kind of video regularly, save a hashtag set for it: one for recipes, one for kitchen tips, one for behind the scenes. Reusing a consistent set helps TikTok learn what your account is about, and it saves you thinking about tags every time. Change 1 or 2 tags per video to match what's specific about it, and drop any tag that never seems to bring views. If you schedule your TikToks ahead, keep the sets in your caption template so they're there every time. Lemonpost keeps a per-platform caption on every post, so the TikTok version can carry its own tags without cluttering the Instagram copy. And keep a note of which sets went with which videos, so when one takes off you know what to repeat.

TikTok hashtags, answered

3 to 6 is the practical range. TikTok doesn't publish a hashtag count limit, but tags count toward the caption limit and long tag blocks push your caption out of view. Mix 1 or 2 broad tags with several niche ones.

There's no good evidence they do. They're the most-used tags on the app and describe nothing, so they don't help TikTok match your video to viewers. Use tags that say what the video is about instead.

No. It picks tags based on what your video is about. Check any tag in TikTok's search bar to see how many posts use it, and prefer tags with an active but not enormous number.

In the caption. On TikTok, hashtags are read from the caption, and there's no sign that tags in comments do anything. Put them at the end so the first line stays readable.

Yes, with a daily limit per visitor so the tool stays quick for everyone. No account, no watermark. We make Lemonpost, a simple social media scheduler, and the free tools are our way of being useful before you ever need us.

No. It goes to an AI model on our server, the hashtag sets come back to your browser, and nothing is saved. Copy the set you want before you leave.
