How it works
How to find an Instagram username in 3 steps
- 1
Describe yourself
Type your name, brand, or what the account is about. A word or two on the vibe helps: cozy, bold, technical, funny.
- 2
Pick a style
Casual, professional, playful, or minimal. Minimal keeps names short and clean; playful allows wordplay.
- 3
Check and claim
Copy a name and search for it in Instagram. If it's taken, try a period or underscore, or get 10 more.
What makes a good Instagram username
Your username is the handle people type, tag, and remember. It shows up in every mention, every comment, and the URL of your profile. A good one is short, easy to spell out loud, and still makes sense in a year. This generator gives you 10 options that fit Instagram's rules, so the only job left is checking which ones are free.
How the generator works
Type a name, a brand, or a niche, pick a style, and the tool sends that to an AI model on Lemonpost's server. It comes back with 10 usernames that stay within Instagram's character rules. Nothing you type is stored, and there's no login. Each visitor gets a daily free limit, and it resets the next day. The tool can't check availability for you, because Instagram doesn't offer a reliable way to do that from outside the app. Search the name in Instagram, or open instagram.com/thename in a browser: a 'page not available' message usually means it's free, though Instagram also reserves some names and holds recently changed ones. Popular names are often taken, so keep a shortlist of 3 rather than falling in love with 1.
Instagram username rules
Usernames can be up to 30 characters and can only use letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. No spaces, no hyphens, no other symbols. Uppercase and lowercase are treated the same, so @PlantMaya and @plantmaya are the same account. Your username is different from your name field, which is the bolder text on your profile and allows spaces and emoji. You can change your username from Edit profile, but if the new one is taken you'll need to pick another. When you change it, Instagram holds your old username for a short period (14 days, at the time of writing) so you can switch back, and nobody else can grab it in that window. Old tags and mentions don't update, so change early rather than late. Instagram also blocks names that impersonate other people or brands, and it reserves some names outright, so a name that looks free but returns an error is probably taken behind the scenes.
What makes a username stick
Short beats long. A name people can say out loud without spelling it is easier to share, and easier to type into a search box. Avoid runs of numbers and stacked underscores; they read like a placeholder. If your first choice is taken, adding a niche word (maya.plants) is usually better than adding a number (maya_2847). Match the name across platforms if you can, so someone who finds you on TikTok can find you on Instagram with the same handle. And think a year ahead: a name tied to a specific city, product, or year can box you in later. If you're stuck between two, pick the one that's easier to say in a voice note. Test the shortlist by reading each name to a friend and asking them to type it. Whichever one they get right first time is the winner.
After you pick a name
Check the name on the platforms you'll use next, not just Instagram. Our TikTok username generator and YouTube name generator use the same approach if you need matching handles. Set the name field on your profile to something searchable (your real name or what you do), because Instagram search matches both the username and the name field. Then fill the bio, add a link, and post something before you tell anyone the handle: an empty profile loses followers before it earns them. Once the account is live, a scheduler keeps it fed without a daily scramble, and that's the part Lemonpost is for.
Good to know
Instagram usernames, answered
Up to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Shorter is better in practice: it's easier to say, tag, and fit into a bio on other platforms.
No. Instagram doesn't provide a reliable way to check from outside the app. Search the name in Instagram or open instagram.com/thename in a browser. If it shows a profile, it's taken.
Yes, from Edit profile in the app. Your old name is held for a short window so you can switch back, and your followers stay. Tags and mentions using the old name won't update, though, so changing early is better than changing late.
They don't have to match, but they should relate. The username is your handle; the name field is searchable text with spaces allowed. Many accounts use a short handle and put the full name or what they do in the name field.
Yes, with a daily limit per visitor so the tool stays quick for everyone. No account, no watermark. We make Lemonpost, a simple social media scheduler, and the free tools are our way of being useful before you ever need us.
No. Your input goes to an AI model on our server, the names come back to your browser, and nothing is stored. Copy the ones you like before you leave the page.
