How it works
How to name a YouTube channel in 3 steps
- 1
Describe the channel
What you make, who it's for, and how it should feel. Your own name is worth adding if you'll be the face of it.
- 2
Pick a style
Casual, professional, playful, or minimal. Minimal gives you 1 or 2 clean words; playful allows puns and wordplay.
- 3
Search and claim
Search the name on YouTube. If nobody has it, set it as your channel name and grab the matching handle.
What makes a good YouTube channel name
A channel name is a promise about what the viewer will get. The best ones tell you the topic, or the person, or the mood, in 2 or 3 words, and they still make sense when the channel grows. This generator gives you 10 ideas to react to, which is usually faster than staring at an empty box until something feels right.
How the generator works
You describe the channel and pick a style. That goes to an AI model on Lemonpost's server, which sends back 10 names in different shapes: some built around your name, some around the topic, some more abstract. Nothing you type is stored, there's no login, and each visitor gets a daily free limit that resets the next day. The tool doesn't check availability, since YouTube has no reliable way to do that from outside. Search the name on YouTube and look for a channel with the same name, then check the matching handle by opening youtube.com/@thename. Channel names don't have to be unique on YouTube, but handles do, so the handle is the one that decides whether a name is really yours. Casual and playful styles allow wordplay; professional and minimal stick to plain, searchable words.
YouTube channel name and handle rules
YouTube has two names. The channel name is the display name shown on your channel and under videos, and it allows spaces, capital letters, and most characters. The handle is the unique @name in your URL. Handles must be 3 to 30 characters and can use letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and periods, with no spaces. Two channels can share a channel name but not a handle. YouTube limits how often you can change both, and the exact windows have changed over time, so check YouTube's help pages before you rename an established channel. Renaming doesn't reset your subscribers or videos, but it can confuse people who search for the old name, so decide early. YouTube also removes names and handles that impersonate people or brands, so keep 'official' and 'verified' out of it.
What makes a channel name work
Say it out loud. If someone hears it in a video or a podcast, can they type it? Names that need spelling out lose viewers on the way to the search box. Keep it short: 2 or 3 words, under 20 characters if you can. Avoid numbers unless they mean something, and avoid 'official', 'TV', and 'HD', which add length without adding meaning. If the channel is you, your name plus a topic word (Sam Cooks) is hard to beat, because it grows with you. If it's a topic channel, describe the topic in plain words viewers already search for. And check that the name isn't a registered brand in your country, since trademark claims can cost you the name later. A quick test: write the name in a thumbnail-sized box. If it doesn't fit comfortably, it's too long for the place viewers will see it most.
After you pick the name
Claim the same handle on Instagram, TikTok, and X if it's free, even if you won't post there yet. Matching handles make you easier to find and stop someone else from taking them. Write a channel description with the same words viewers would search for. Then upload something before you share the name, because an empty channel is hard to subscribe to. Once you're posting on a schedule, our YouTube scheduler can queue videos and Shorts with titles, descriptions, and covers in advance, which is easier than uploading by hand on the day. Keep the name, handle, and channel art consistent so the profile looks like one thing, not three.
Good to know
YouTube channel names, answered
The channel name is the display name (spaces allowed, doesn't have to be unique). The handle is the @name in your URL, which must be unique and follows stricter rules: 3 to 30 characters, no spaces.
Long enough that it isn't the limiting factor. What matters is that it fits under a video thumbnail and is easy to say. Handles are capped at 30 characters.
Yes, from YouTube Studio. Subscribers and videos stay. YouTube limits how often you can change the name and the handle, so pick something you'll keep for a while.
A little. YouTube search matches channel names and handles, so a name that includes the topic helps people find you. Titles, descriptions, and watch time matter far more.
Yes, with a daily limit per visitor so the tool stays quick for everyone. No account, no watermark. We make Lemonpost, a simple social media scheduler, and the free tools are our way of being useful before you ever need us.
No. Your description goes to an AI model on our server, the names come back, and nothing is stored. Copy the ones you want before you leave.
