How it works

How to write a LinkedIn headline in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Say what you do

Your role, who you help, and one proof point. Skip the adjectives; the tool will find the words.

  2. 2

    Pick a tone

Casual, professional, playful, or minimal. Professional is the safe default; minimal gives you a plain role and company.

  3. 3

    Paste it in

Every headline is under 220 characters. Paste it into the Headline field under Edit intro on your profile.

What makes a good LinkedIn headline

Your headline follows you everywhere on LinkedIn: under your name in search results, next to your comments, on every post you publish, and in the connection request someone gets from you. It's the most-read line on your profile by a wide margin. This generator gives you 5 versions that say what you do and for whom, so you can pick one and stop rewriting it.

How the generator works

Describe what you do and who you help, pick a tone, and the tool sends that to an AI model on Lemonpost's server. It returns 5 headlines, each under LinkedIn's 220-character limit, with the character count shown next to each. Nothing you type is stored, there's no login, and each visitor gets a daily free limit that resets the next day. The 5 headlines use different structures: a plain role line, a 'who I help and how' line, a results line, a keyword-first line, and one with a bit more personality. Pick the structure that fits how you use LinkedIn, then swap in your real numbers and names. Casual allows contractions and a bit of warmth; minimal strips it back to role and company.

LinkedIn headline rules and limits

Headlines can be up to 220 characters. That's the full length shown on your profile page, but almost everywhere else LinkedIn cuts it short: in the feed, in search results, and next to comments you'll typically see only the first 60 to 80 characters, followed by an ellipsis. The exact cutoff depends on screen size and changes over time, so put the most important words first. If you leave the headline blank, LinkedIn fills it with your current job title and company. You can use the vertical bar, commas, or periods to separate ideas, and emoji are allowed, though they read as unprofessional in many industries. Bold or fancy Unicode text is possible but isn't searchable, so keep your key terms in plain characters. On the mobile app the cutoff is shorter still, and since most LinkedIn reading happens on phones, the first 5 or 6 words are the ones that really count. Check your own headline in the app after saving it.

A structure that works

The simplest headline with a real job: role, then who you help, then how or with what result. 'Fractional CFO for SaaS startups. Seed to Series B without the finance headaches.' That's under 100 characters, it front-loads the role, and it contains the words a founder would search for. Avoid the words everyone uses: passionate, visionary, guru, ninja. They take space and say nothing. Numbers help if they're real: clients served, years, a result. And write it for the reader who doesn't know you yet, because that's who sees it most. Your current job title is fine if the title itself is the point. If it isn't, describe the outcome instead. If you're between jobs, say what you're looking for and what you bring, in that order, and skip 'open to work' in the headline itself; LinkedIn has a separate frame for that.

Headlines, search, and your posts

LinkedIn search matches words in your headline, so include the plain terms recruiters or clients would type. If you consult on pricing, the word 'pricing' should be in there. The headline also travels with every post and comment you publish, which means it works hardest when you post regularly: each post is a chance for the headline to be seen by people who don't follow you yet. If posting consistently is the hard part, our LinkedIn text formatter helps with the writing and Lemonpost's LinkedIn scheduler handles the publishing, including a scheduled first comment for the link you'd otherwise put in the post.

Good to know

LinkedIn headlines, answered

220 characters. Only the first 60 to 80 or so show in the feed and in search results, so lead with the words that matter most. Every headline this tool writes stays under 220.

If the title says what you do and people search for it, yes. If it's vague (Associate, Consultant, Founder), add who you help and what changes for them. Titles are fine; titles alone often aren't.

Yes. LinkedIn search matches the headline, so use the plain words a recruiter or client would type: the skill, the industry, the role. Skip the buzzwords, which nobody searches for.

You can. Emoji and vertical bars are allowed. Whether they help depends on your field; in most B2B industries a clean text headline reads better. Styled Unicode letters aren't searchable, so keep key terms plain.

Yes, with a daily limit per visitor so the tool stays quick for everyone. No account, no watermark. We make Lemonpost, a simple social media scheduler, and the free tools are our way of being useful before you ever need us.

No. Your description goes to an AI model on our server, the headlines come back to your browser, and nothing is saved. Copy the one you want before you leave.
