What a good Instagram engagement rate looks like
Instagram engagement rate is the share of your followers who like or comment on a typical post. It's the first number brands look at when they size up a creator, and a more honest health check for your account than follower count will ever be.
The formula this calculator uses
Likes plus comments, divided by followers, times 100. Average over your last 10 to 12 feed posts for a stable reading, since a single Reel that took off will flatter the number and a quiet week will do the opposite. It's the same follower-based formula influencer platforms use, so your result is comparable.
Instagram benchmarks in 2026
Most accounts sit around 1 percent. Between 1 and 3 percent is solid, 3 to 5 percent is good, and above 5 percent is excellent. Size matters: accounts under 10k followers routinely run several times higher than accounts over a million, so compare yourself to accounts your size, not to celebrities.
Why brands check this before they pay
A 20k account at 6 percent reaches more real people per post than a 200k account at 0.5 percent, and sponsors price accordingly. Instagram's ranking also leans on early engagement signals, so a rising rate tends to compound: better engagement earns more reach, which earns more engagement.
How to raise it on Instagram
Carousels and Reels typically out-engage single images because they hold attention longer. Write first lines that stop the scroll, ask something answerable in the caption, and reply to comments in the first hour. Posting when your audience is actually online helps too, which is exactly what a scheduler is for.
Good to know
Instagram engagement, answered
Around 1 percent is typical, 1 to 3 percent is solid, 3 to 5 percent is good, and above 5 percent is excellent. Smaller accounts naturally run higher, so judge yourself against accounts of similar size.
Ten to twelve recent feed posts is the standard window. It smooths out the outliers without reaching back into an account you no longer run.
Include them if they're a regular part of your feed, but know they can swing the average hard in both directions. Some brands calculate feed posts and Reels separately for exactly that reason.
They matter to Instagram's ranking, but they're not publicly visible, so standard benchmarks count only likes and comments. This calculator does the same so your number is comparable.
Common causes: rapid follower growth diluting the average, posting at quiet hours, or leaning on a format your audience has cooled on. Track the trend across months and compare like with like, Reels against Reels, carousels against carousels.
