How it works
How to resize a photo for Instagram
- 1
Upload your photo
Any image works: phone photos, exports, screenshots. Nothing uploads anywhere, it all happens in your browser.
- 2
Pick size and fit
Choose the Instagram format, then decide: crop to fill the frame, or fit the whole photo on a blurred background.
- 3
Download and post
You get an exact-size, high-quality JPG that Instagram won't crop or squash. Post it or schedule it.
Instagram image sizes in 2026
Instagram accepts almost any image and then quietly crops or compresses it to fit its formats. Uploading at the exact target size is how you stay in charge of what the crop keeps, and it's the difference between a sharp post and a soft, oddly-framed one.
The four sizes that cover everything
Square posts are 1080 by 1080. Portrait posts are 1080 by 1350 and get the most feed height, which is why most creators default to them. Landscape is 1080 by 566 for wide shots. Stories and Reels are 1080 by 1920, the full 9:16 phone screen. Feed photos can also upload at up to 1440 pixels wide since 2025, but 1080 remains the safe, universal target.
What happens when the size is wrong
Instagram center-crops whatever doesn't fit its ratio, so heads and product edges disappear without asking. Oversized files get recompressed harder, softening detail. And a landscape photo dropped into a story floats tiny between huge bars. Exact sizing sidesteps all three.
Crop to fill, or fit with blur?
Crop to fill zooms until the frame is covered and trims the rest, best when the subject sits near the middle. Fit with blur keeps the entire photo visible and fills the empty space with a blurred, zoomed copy of the same image, the look story editors made standard. Wide product shots and screenshots usually want fit; portraits usually want crop.
Small habits that keep photos sharp
Export at exactly 1080 wide rather than letting the app downscale a 4000-pixel file. Prefer portrait 4:5 for feed posts, it simply occupies more screen. And if you post the same photo to several platforms, size it per platform rather than reusing one crop; each network has its own frame.
Good to know
Instagram sizes, answered
1080 by 1080 for square, 1080 by 1350 for portrait, 1080 by 566 for landscape. Portrait shows biggest in the feed. Since 2025 Instagram also accepts up to 1440 wide for feed photos, but 1080 remains the universal safe target.
1080 by 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical frame, the same size as Reels. Photos in other shapes float between blurred or solid bars, which is exactly what the fit-with-blur option here reproduces on your terms.
Any upload outside Instagram's supported ratios gets center-cropped automatically, with no say in what survives. Resizing to the exact format first means you decide the framing instead of the algorithm.
Crop when the subject is central and the edges are expendable, like portraits. Fit with blur when everything matters, like screenshots, artwork, and product shots. The preview shows both, so try each before downloading.
